I sat on my couch for 8 ½ innings waiting for Boston to do something in The American League Championship Series, Game 2, against Detroit, yesterday evening. Detroit ace Max Scherzer had shut The Red Sox down for seven innings, allowing only one hit. A Boston batter struck out to start the eighth and I said that’s it. I turned the tv off and headed for the bed, sure that Boston, who I am rooting for, had lost.
Then, I’m driving to my chiropractor’s office, this morning, and I hear a sportscaster on the radio say, “Well for all of you who went to bed early, last night, Boston hit a grand slam in the eighth, and then got a run in the bottom of the 9th to beat Detroit.”
There is an old saying in Grateful Dead and 12 Step Circles that goes: “Don’t quit before the miracle.” It certainly applies to thisbaseball playoff situation. The Red Sox did something that I kept hoping my Braves would do, but didn’t: get the bats working.
Game three between Boston and Detroit will be interesting because Boston has probably gained some confidence, while Detroit may have lost some. You can be confident that I will keep my couch seat for the duration of the game.
Batter up!
